Hispanic Scholarships in Florida
While Florida has a large Hispanic population, Latino and Latina students are not well-represented in Florida's colleges and universities. Like the rest of the United States, not nearly enough of Florida’s Hispanic students are being admitted to or graduating from college.
The issues faced by Hispanic students are similar to those faced by other people of color. Studies show that students of color are having a harder time adapting to and succeeding in college than their peers. These studies speculate that the reasons for this gap include the higher likelihood that students of color come from poverty, may have attended a poorly performing school or may have had limited access to learning and enrichment activities in their community. These studies also show that schools who make an effort to provide individualized support for students of color pays off in higher graduation rates, and, we can presume, more success later in life.
Students who do not speak English as their first language may also face unique challenges when they attend an English-speaking school. While many colleges have programs for students who are new to the US and learning English, there are typically very few programs for students who might be considered fluent, but still need some support in understanding the many nuances and quirks of English, some of which can be very crucial to college success.
Providing extra support to Hispanic students in Florida, as with any students who may not come to college with the same advantages as most of their white and Asian contemporaries, only makes sense in the long run. Helping all of our students, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or any other quality which tends to create unequal outcomes, helps all of us. The more education we can give our young Americans, the more likely they are to become leaders in their communities, in business and even on the political stage. America is the Great Melting Pot, it’s time we see that reflected in our schools, businesses, government offices and other power structures.
