Minority Scholarships In Florida
Many of the students in Florida's K-12 classrooms are considered members of a minority. While many of these students do go on to pursue some type of post-high school education, including technical schools, college or university, or other training programs, many do not have that opportunity. Even though we've made great strides in the United States to make sure all of our citizens have equal opportunities, regardless of the color of their skin, their nationality, their disability status, their socioeconomic status or their sexuality, it's easy to see that we still have a long way to go. The fact that the demographics of our college rosters still don't match (or even come close) to the demographics of our country means we still have work to do. We need to work together to insure that every American who has the skill, the drive and the talent to go to and complete college has the same opportunity as his or her peers.
By definition, a potential college student is considered to be a member of a minority group if they are Black, Hispanic or Asian Pacific Islander. While many would argue that this is a far from comprehensive list (and they'd be right), it's all we have to work with at the moment. The Millennial generation, currently old enough to be attending, about to attend or recently graduated from college, is considered to be the most diverse class of college students in America's history. This is fantastic news, and gives us hope that we may be working towards closing the achievement gap, at least for some students.
Recent studies and interviews with minority students from Florida show that many feel they do not get the support they need to succeed in college. It is speculated that because the Florida college system has served many more white and Asian students than minority students historically, our colleges and universities may be victims of their own privilege, and don't recognize that the needs of a minority student might be vastly different than the needs of a white student. Many of our minority students are starting college, but they're not finishing at the same rate as peers, which means there is more research and work to do.
