African American Scholarships in Florida

More African American students than ever are attending American colleges and universities, but college graduation rates for Black students have remained stationary, with only around 43% of Black students who begin college leaving with a degree. Even though Black women are graduating at a slightly higher rate than Black men, low African American graduation rates overall may indicate obstacles in the system faced by Black students.

Programs based out of Florida designed to support the unique needs of Black college students going to school in Florida help increase the graduation rates of all minority students, especially Black students. Schools with a higher percentage of Black students are more likely to offer specific support for Black and minority students, possibly due to more student demand. Brown University is an example of a college that makes a deliberate effort to support their Black enrollees with the reward of a higher Black graduation rate, while Berkeley, in California, which is home to very few Black students, suffers from a very low graduation rate. Affirmative Action, which is a federal law meant to close the gap between white and minority individuals in higher education and the workplace, has been banned as a determiner in college admissions in some states, including California, Florida and Texas. The Affirmative Action ban in California is the oldest, it was enacted in 1996. Since that time, California has seen Black college student enrollment drop to less than 3%, even though enrollment by Asian students has skyrocketed.

The good news is, even with a ban on Affirmative Action, there are grants open for many African American pupils. Even while the battle for these awards is tough, scholarships should certainly contribute to the promise that Black university students experience the exact same opportunities as their non-Black classmates. Further down, discover a handful of suggestions of scholarships for African American university students. This list is only a place to start, and is far from comprehensive.

The American Bar Association has a special scholarship available for minority students pursuing a J.D.
The Librarians’ Black Caucus is more influential than they sound, and offer a variety of scholarships.
