Merit Scholarships in Michigan
Merit Scholarships or Merit-based Scholarships are based on a student's academic, artistic, athletic or other abilities, and often factor in an applicant's extracurricular activities and community service record. The most common merit-based scholarships, awarded by either private organizations or directly by a student's intended college, recognize academic achievement or high scores on standardized tests. The National Merit Scholarship awards incoming first-year undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Students must apply and be accepted for admissions. Applicants must have taken the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and list their first choice university with the National Merit Corporation. Variable from $1,000 to $2,000 depending on financial need as determined by the annual FAFSA results. Student must meet National Merit's renewable criteria to continue receiving the award. There are various scholarships awarded to incoming freshmen based on grade point average, class rank, standardized test scores, or similar criteria. Consideration for these awards is automatic, and no additional applications are required. Aspiring students may check the website of the Michigan State University Office of admissions for the complete list of the merit scholarship that the university offers.
