Merit Scholarships in Georgia

If you're a junior in a Georgia high school, it's time to start thinking seriously about your future, and what you want to do with it. Will you be looking for work right after graduation? Do you want to learn a trade, like auto repair or cosmetology? Perhaps you're leaning toward a two-year college degree, such as engineering tech or licensed practical nursing? Do you have longer-term plans for your education, such as a four year degree or even a degree which requires years of commitment beyond a typical Bachelor's degree. You might not even know what you want to do with your life, which is perfectly normal, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't start exploring your options and honing in on the direction you'd like your life to take. High school will be over before you know it, starting to prepare for your next steps now will pay off with interest (metaphorically) in the future.

Start by talking to your high school guidance counselor. At the very least, he or she should have information on colleges, universities and trade schools, as well as information on how to apply for financial aid. He or she will also know (or know how to find) the admission requirements for various programs, and can advise you on how to meet any you're not currently meeting.

You can also network with people who've attended the colleges, universities and trade schools you're interested in. Find out what a typical semester looks like, in terms of workload and cost. Find out how easy it was to find work in the alumni's field after graduation. See if you can sit in and observe a few classes, taking note of the quality of the class discussion and lecture materials. Most colleges, universities and trade schools will encourage you to observe classes, and should be anxious to win you over with their excellent pedagogical mastery.

Finding scholarships and financial aid is only one of several important concerns you should have about your post-high school future. Getting a full-ride scholarship to a college that doesn't meet your needs or won't give you the future you want is hardly a bargain.
