Scholarships for Women in Florida

For the first time ever, more women than men are entering and finishing college in Florida. Women are applying to Florida colleges at record rates, including many degree programs which have been historically dominated by men. There is still a long road ahead of us to make sure that, in addition to the successes women are seeing in college, students of color, students with disabilities and other under-represented groups are given the same chance as women have been given and maximized upon. These are exciting times, but the battle to make our education system equitable is far from over.

In the old days, a woman might attend college to find a husband, or to be trained to do a "pink collar" job, like nursing or teaching. Since women have been turning old stereotypes on thier ear, it's simpler than ever for qualified women to join fields where they've never been (or never been welcomed) before. This is a great time to be a woman who wants a college education.

This is all great news, but the cost of college in Florida still makes a higer education seem like a pipe dream to many Americans. The news is full of scary stories about recent college grads who can't find work in their field, or are worried about how they'll pay back their student loans. These fears are keeping many American who could do very well in college from attending, and that's bad for all of us.

Student loans are not the only option, however! If you've got excellent grades, or excelled at a high school sport or team activity, you may be eligible for a merit based scholarship in Florida. Students who come from rougher socioeconomic backgrounds might qualify for an income-based scholarship. Scholarships can come from many different sources, including colleges, not for profit groups, private organizations, or even from individuals.

However you might get financial aid, it's critical for you to recognize that the grant, scholarship or student loan you receive is an investment in your future. Make sure you do all you can to prove that you were worthy of the investment. Hard work is its own best reward.
