Scholarships for Single Mothers in California
One of the best things single parents can do for their children is show them the value of education by continuing their own. Those with college degrees earn, on average, $20,000 per year more than their peers who only hold a high school diploma. Single parents are more likely to live in poverty than partnered parents, earning a college degree can make all the difference for single moms and dads.
Paying for college is a challenge for most American students, it can seem almost impossible for single parents who are already providing for their children. Fortunately, there are many programs in place which can help single moms and dads find the resources they need to minimize their out-of-pocket costs. Every state has a program, there are federal programs, and there are several private organizations which sponsor scholarships and grants for single parents.
The first steps to find information on scholarships and other types of financial aid is to speak to your high school guidance counselor or admissions counselors at the schools you’d like to attend. Pay close attention to the details of the application process, especially to eligibility requirements and application deadlines.
When you have your applications in hand, gather up all the information you’ll need to complete them. This includes your social security number, your financial information, your high school and any previous college transcripts and proof of residence. Some applications may require more from you, you may need to write an essay or provide letters of recommendation.
When applying for aid, remember that you’re not only seeking funds to help pay for tuition, books and fees; you’ll also need to budget for childcare while you’re in class or studying. Some colleges and universities have childcare on campus, or your admissions counselor may know of good facilities close to campus you can use instead. Grants and scholarships aimed exclusively at single parents will often provide a childcare stipend, but it’s important to be clear on what your scholarship or grant money can and cannot cover.
Going to college as a single parent can be very challenging, but the rewards for students and their children are innumerable.
