Minority Scholarships In California

In these tough times, it may seem as if the dream of a college education is slipping away. The price tag of a postsecondary education is growing at an alarming rate, with seemingly no end in sight. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the cost of undergraduate tuition, room, and board at private not-for-profit institutions rose 31% (adjusted for inflation) between 2000-01 and 2010-11; worse yet, prices at public institutions rose an astonishing 42% during this same period (Source). Few among us would deny that our incomes have not kept pace with these increases. In the state of California, the situation appears to be reaching a breaking point, with the cost of a university education becoming prohibitive for many current and potential students. An example would be the University of California, where according to a recently announced long-term budget plan, students could face tuition increases of 8% to 16% each year over the next four years; the result could be tuition fees as high as $22,068 for the 2015-16 school year.

Thankfully, for minority students there may be some relief from skyrocketing California tuition rates. This relief comes in the form of minority scholarships. These grants are often available to African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and other diverse groups. One such scholarship is the Stockton Cathay Club Scholarship awarded to Chinese Americans residents of San Joaquin County. As well as UCLA's Dr. Ralph J. Bunche Freshman Alumni Scholarships, which are available to students from historically underrepresented backgrounds, including African Americans, Native Americans, and Latino Americans. These are just a few of the many scholarships available to minority students.

When applying for these scholarships, it is essential to meet all deadlines, check all applications to make sure that they are accurate and complete, and follow all application instructions. Check regularly with the financial aid departments of individual colleges, along with local and federal government agencies, to find out about what scholarship opportunities may be available. It is a small investment of time and effort, with priceless dividends in the form of an education that can benefit the student for a lifetime.
