Merit Scholarships in California
Like an academic scholarship, a merit scholarship is meant to reward a promising student seeking a higher education, who has shown themselves to be responsible, intelligent, and hardworking. Many merit scholars have helped shape the California of today, and today’s merit scholars will help shape the California of tomorrow.
The most famous merit scholarship is the National Merit Scholarship award, which is given to the best and the brightest college-bound high school students nationwide each year. Some former National Merit recipients are Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagen and John G. Roberts, television host Jim Cramer, retired astronaut Mae Jemison, founder of Microsoft Bill Gates, and many, many more.
The National Merit Scholarship is an option for students who achieve a certain cut-off score on the PSAT/NMSQT exam. The top 50,000 of these students are whittled down to 15,000 finalists who compete for several individual scholarships, of varying amounts.
The National Merit program is sponsored both by government funding and contributions from individuals and corporations. Those who receive this prestigious recognition are among the very best of our high school age children, and are awarded without discrimination based on gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or other attribute not related to their high-school performance and potential.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation states it’s values thusly: 
- to identify and honor academically talented U.S. high school students
- to stimulate increased support for their education
- to provide efficient and effective scholarship program management for organizations that wish to sponsor college undergraduate scholarships
California students who are interested in applying to be a National Merit Scholarship should plan ahead. The qualifying exam must be taken within the first three years of high school, it’s too late to take it if you are already a high school senior. Keep in mind that even if you are rewarded one of these historied scholarships, it is unlikely it will cover the entirety of your college expenses. While some corporate sponsored awards may be for more money, the standard NMS is only for $2500. Students who receive the NMS should have additional plans in place to pay for college costs.
