Teaching Scholarships in California
Teaching can be a wonderfully rewarding career for bright students who have a passion for knowledge and the patience to impart that knowledge to students of their own. Starting salaries for teachers are often lower than salaries of other college degree holders, so seeking the right kind of financial aid is critical for the future teachers preparing to enter a college or university. While many recent graduates are struggling to find work lucrative enough to begin repaying student loans, no matter the degree they hold, new teachers are frequently considered probationary hires until they’ve worked for at least two and as many as five years in the classroom, with frequent evaluations. Low starting salaries and job insecurity can make the starting-out years particularly tricky for young teachers.
Not every teaching specialty is as dire, however. As always, qualified math, science, technology and special education teachers are always in demand. The federal government requires that all teachers be experts in the fields they teach, a prospective teacher would be wise to double major in math, chemistry, biology or physics, or pursue the challenges and rewards of special education. In these fields, a teacher can find work nearly anywhere in the United States (and even outside our borders), as well as having greater job security than teachers in more saturated specialties. Math, science and special education specialties can also earn prospective teachers more financial aid options and other incentives, to help fill the shortage as quickly as possible.
Many organizations offer scholarships for high-performing students who wish to enter the teaching profession, the list below is a starting point. Continue your research by speaking with your high school guidance counselor, the college or university you want to attend, or other state and national teaching and education related organizations.
