Nursing Scholarships in California
Nursing is a field which will always be in demand. After all, humans are probably not going to stop getting sick. Additionally, as the Baby Boomer generation continues to age, a larger proportion of the US population is elderly, and in need of specialized care.
Nursing is an exciting field with many opportunities for program graduates to work in a variety of fields. Nursing education programs can range from very short, such as a two year LPN program, to very long, such as the certification needed to become a nurse practitioner, who has nearly as much knowledge and privileges as a physician. Nursing has historically been a field dominated by women, but as times change, so does the gender make up of our nursing pool. More men are entering the field all the time, and previous out-dated stigmas about male nurses are beginning to dissipate.
The cost of nursing school varies, depending on the type of degree being sought and the specialty the future nurse chooses. Clearly, a nurse practitioner will have spent much more on his or her education than an LPN, but both are vital to the field.
Paying for nursing school can be a challenge, but the promising job market and appealing salaries for nurses, even in their first years, can help alleviate the some of the nervousness college students with less stable job prospects might face. In addition to student loans and grants, future nurses might choose to pay for their education through scholarships.
The California Board of Nursing has a list of several sites with many scholarships available, including NURSES for a Healthier Tomorrow, Choose Nursing, and Discover Nursing.
If you belong to a minority group, you may have luck finding a scholarship through Minority Nurse, which is working to bring diversity to the field.
The American Legion gives away a nursing scholarship every year.
CampusRN has a nursing scholarship for California.
The American Association of College Nurses also has an extensive list of scholarships, with many for minority or other under-represented groups of students.
Nursing can be a very rewarding career, and the hard work required to earn a nursing degree pays off quickly once a new nurse enters the field. Nursing is a great career choice for anyone who enjoys caring for and helping others, and a career with a bright and dependable future.
