Engineering Scholarships in California
There are over 200 different kinds of engineering, which all can be classified into seven groups: electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, engineering management, engineering sciences and geotechnical engineering.
Chemical engineers work with matter at the atomic and molecular level, as they study how atoms and molecules react around each other. Chemical engineers might specialize in agriculture, with the environment, or with our food and water supplies.
Electrical engineers work with electricity, light and magnetism. An electrical engineer might go on to work on computer hardware or software, with integrated circuits, or with digital signal processors.
Civil engineers design and manage infrastructure. A civil engineer might work as a bridge builder, or a city planner. Civil engineers need a complex understanding of how social systems work, and how the infrastructure around those social systems impacts the city as a whole.
Mechanical engineers study mechanical systems, from very, very small to very, very large. Mechanical engineers are responsible for designing our space shuttles, bringing high-tech prosthetics to amputees, and the latest fuel efficiency measures in automobile engines.
Geotechnical engineers study what’s below the surface of our planet. Geotechnical engineers might work with rocks, minerals, raw metals, natural gas and petroleum products.
People who manage engineering projects need to have as much knowledge about engineering as they do about management, which is where engineering management specialist come in. An engineering manager has a degree in engineering first, and training in the complexities required to successfully manage an engineering project second.
Engineering scientists are those who combine engineering with math, physics or chemistry in order to solve problems.
A degree in engineering, like any of the STEM fields, can be a smart investment in the future. STEM jobs are well compensated, and outnumber people qualified to fill them. An engineering degree from a respected school can open the door to a long term, well-paid, secure job for those willing to work hard in and after college.
California, in particular, has several scholarships available to students who want to study engineering. For example:
California Transportation Foundation Scholarship
The Santa Clara Valley chapter of the Society of Women Engineers scholarship
California’s American Council of Engineering Companies offers several generous scholarships for future engineers.
