Art Scholarships in California
When we look back at ancient civilizations, one of the tools which helps us understand our ancestors is studying the art of their time. Perhaps, thousands of years from now, when all of us who can read this now are long gone, future generations will study the art of our time, and they’ll understand more about who we are.
Attending art school, or obtaining an art degree, can be seen as less serious than a course of study which offers a guarantee of work after graduation. While it’s true it may be harder for an artist to have a lifetime of job security than, say, a rocket scientist, there are still many, many working artists. Look around you, every sign you read, every software interface you use, and every ad you view was created by an artist. Even the font you’re reading right now was created by an artist. In the digital age, there are multiple opportunities for artists which didn’t even exist twenty or thirty years ago.
Some might also argue that a degree in art is unnecessary, and contend that an artist is either talented or they aren’t, there’s no teaching talent. While there may be some truth in this statement, even the most talented artist can benefit from learning about the artists who went before him or her, practicing technique under the watchful eye of an advisor, and learning to take constructive criticism from peers. While a college degree may not be necessarily necessary for these learning opportunities to occur, the structure and history of a college art program may be just what an art student needs.
Unlike other fields, students applying to attend art school and obtain scholarships will most likely be asked to provide a portfolio. Other students may be able to prove their talents with an essay, great transcripts and a spectacular interview, art students need to prove they have the raw talent to bring something new to the arts.
Like other pathways in the arts, competition in art school can be fierce. If you go into it prepared to do your best, you’ll be fine.
