Scholarships for Hispanic Women
While opportunities for women in higher education have increased, minority women continue to be under-represented on our college and university campuses. Scholarships can mean the difference between attending college and not for many low-income Hispanic women.
The good news is that more young, Hispanic women are attending college and joining the workforce and seeking leadership roles. Scholarships earmarked for Hispanic women have played a big part in this growth, but the drive and ambition of these trailblazing women cannot be minimized. The history of Hispanic women in American higher education is complex, due in large part to lingering issues of racism, poverty and sexism. Currently, Hispanic women are entering college at a higher rate than Hispanic men, and are out-performing Hispanic males when they arrive. The number of Hispanic students filling the seats of our higher education classrooms is still shamefully low, but some small progress is being made.
If you’re looking for scholarships for Hispanic women, the first place to look is either with a high school guidance counselor or an admissions counselor at a preferred college or university. Some state or local governments may offer grants or scholarships, so it’s worth searching locally as well. As with all scholarships, it’s imperative to read over the requirements and rules for any scholarship before you submit an application, so do your homework carefully.
There are several privately funded scholarships for Hispanic women, here are a few well-known options to get your search started:
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is a not-for-profit organization which raises money to assist many Hispanic students attend college and succeed after graduation.
The Hispanic Heritage Foundation works to prepare young Latinos and Latinas for leadership roles in their communities and beyond, including providing college scholarships.
The Hispanic Women’s Council’s aim is to increase opportunities for Hispanic women, and they offer an annual scholarship.
The Chicana/Latina Foundation offers several merit-based scholarships of $1500 a piece. This year there are up to 40 scholarships available.
