Law School Scholarships for Women
A law degree not only opens up many opportunities for a young woman who wants to practice law, it’s also a powerful degree in business and politics. A law degree can be a powerful and fruitful investment, even in today’s market.
While it’s true there are many recent law school grads who are struggling to find work, the current glut of lawyers may be only temporary. Employers in other fields may be impressed by the dedication and hard work needed to earn a law degree, and contacts from law school can provide numerous networking opportunities.
Paying for law school, like any degree, can be very expensive. Law has traditionally been a male dominated field, so there is a current push to encourage more women to choose a law career. This means there are many funding opportunities available. While the first place to start looking for funding assistance is the college or university you want to attend, the following resources and organizations may also be helpful in your search:
The American Association of University Women offers a Selected Professions Fellowship to African American women pursuing a career in law, medicine, and business, as African American women have been under-represented in these fields.
The Equal Justice America Legal Services Fellowships offer assistants to students who want to practice law with the poor and underserved.
The Mike Eidson Scholarship awards third or fourth year female law students who wish to pursue a career in criminal prosecution.
The Leadership Institute for Women of Color Attorneys in Law or Business offers an annual fellowship to a woman of color in law school.
The American Association of Retired People offers scholarships to low income women over fifty who want to return to school.
The Baker Hostetler Fellowship Program offers up to $25,000 to deserving students who will promote diversity in the field.
Law school can be the first step towards a rewarding and lucrative career. Finding a way to pay for law school without taking on burdensome debt can help make that path less uncertain, even in today’s troubled economic times.
