Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
Description
This grant program was created by the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 signed by President Bush on February 8, 2006. The Academic Competitiveness Grant Program (ACG) awards grants to eligible financially needy students who complete a rigorous secondary school program of study. An ACG is available during a student's first and second academic years of undergraduate education in an eligible undergraduate program.
Eligibility
Applicant must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be enrolled full-time
- Be Pell eligible, awards are in addition to Pell Grant
- Have successfully completed rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education
- Have maintained cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, if second year student.
Value
$750 first-year awards for students graduating from high school after 1/1/2006; $1,300 second-year awards for students graduating from high school after 1/1/2005.

Student applies for ACG by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Assistance League of the Triangle Scholarship Program
Description
The Assistance League of the Triangle, a nonprofit volunteer organization, assists individuals in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina (Wake, Durham, and Orange Counties) through service, resources and financial support.
Eligibility
Applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Scholarship for Graduating High School Seniors:
- Live in the Research Triangle area
- Plan to enroll as freshmen at any of North Carolina's post-secondary educational or technical institutions
- Have grade point averages of 2.5 or better
- Be a US Citizen or have permanent resident status
Scholarship for Working Single Mothers:
- Be actively working single mothers residing in the Research Triangle area
- Have a high school diploma or a GED by June 2007
- Currently attend or plan to enroll at any of North Carolina's post-secondary educational or technical institutions
- Be a US Citizen or have permanent resident status
Scholarship for Health Care Profession Students:
- Reside in the Research Triangle area
- Have a high school diploma or a GED by June 2007
- Currently attend or plan to enroll at any North Carolina community college to pursue a certificate, diploma or associate's degree in the health care professions
- Be a US Citizen or have permanent resident status.
For the programs listed above, scholarship renewal may be available to students with a college grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 and above.
Value
The scholarships are valued at $1,000 to $2500 per academic year. Funds must be used for tuition and educational expenses.
Application Procedure

The application deadline is March 12, 2008. In addition to the application, candidates may be interviewed by the Scholarship Committee. Selected applicants will be notified by the first week in May.
Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarships
DescriptionEstablished in 1955 by a trust agreement of the late Aubrey Lee Brooks, these scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors from a 14-county area of North Carolina. The North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority provides central administration for the Brooks Foundation.
Eligibility
Awards are made annually to 17 graduating high school seniors who plan to enroll as full-time students in a degree-granting program at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, or the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Brooks recipients must permanently reside in one of the following counties: Alamance, Bertie, Caswell, Durham, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Swain, or Warren. One additional scholarship is awarded to a student from the cities of Greensboro and High Point and to a senior at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics who is from an eligible county. Criteria include financial need, merit, leadership, character, and the will of the recipient to help himself or herself prepare for a career as a useful and informed citizen.
Value
The scholarship provides for an award of approximately one-half of the cost of an Undergraduate education. The maximum award for the 2008-2009 academic year is $8,000. Brooks Scholars may also receive funding for summer internships, research or study abroad and a one time computer allowance up to $3,000. The scholarship is renewable, provided the recipient has continued financial need, remains enrolled full time at an eligible institution, and maintains a 2.75 cumulative grade point average and good citizenship.
Application Procedure
Applicants must complete both the Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship Application and the College Scholarship Service Financial Aid PROFILE online. A link to the Scholarship Application is provided below. Upon submission of the application, you will be provided instructions for submitting the PROFILE. Both the application and the PROFILE must be completed to be considered for the Brooks Scholarship Program. Please note that the PROFILE form requires a processing fee; fee waivers may be available for students who cannot afford to pay the fee. The following deadlines apply to the program: Register, complete and submit the PROFILE no later than January 25, 2008; complete and submit the Brooks Application no later than February 1, 2008.
Education Access Rewards North Carolina Scholars Fund (EARN)
DescriptionEARN was established by the 2007 North Carolina General Assembly to provide grants to eligible students to enable them to obtain an education beyond the high school level at community colleges and universities in North Carolina without incurring student loans during the first two years of their postsecondary education.
Eligibility
To be considered for funding:
- The student must qualify as a legal resident of North Carolina and the United States and must qualify as a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes.
- The student must be enrolled full-time and be enrolled in college for the first time, exclusive of any college credits earned while in high school, at a North Carolina public university or a community college within seven months of high school graduation or obtaining a GED.
- The student must be classified as "dependent" for Federal Title IV programs or is a ward or dependent of the court.
- The student must demonstrate total family income not exceeding 200% of the applicable federal poverty guideline.
- The student must meet all other eligibility requirements for the federal Pell Grant.
- In order to retain eligibility for a grant for a second year, the student must meet the satisfactory academic progress standards established by the eligible college or university in which the student is enrolled.
- The student may not receive a grant through this program for more than the equivalent of two academic years.
Value
The maximum grant for which a student is eligible is $4,000 per academic year. The EARN grant plus the Pell Grant cannot exceed the cost of attendance established by each college or university.
Application Procedure
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is used to qualify for Pell Grants and other aid programs and list at least one North Carolina public university or community college on the form. Eligible students will be notified by college or university financial aid office. The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Epsilon Sigma Alpha
Description
The Scholarship Board of the North Carolina Council - ESA (Epsilon Sigma Alpha) is a non-profit/ tax exempt 501(c)3 organization providing scholarships to individuals training for work with exceptional children, excluding the academically gifted.
Scholarships are awarded annually in April. The amount varies from year to year and multiple recipients may be chosen. Scholarships are based on need, desire and academics - there is no requirement to join Epsilon Sigma Alpha International.
The Scholarship Application for the 2008-2009 Academic Year will be available January 1, 2008. The deadline for submitting that application is April 1, 2008. Applicants will be notified, whether an award is granted or not, by May 31st.
Eligibility
- Must be a student enrolled in an accredited college or university, either as an undergraduate student, or as a current NC teacher seeking additional training.
- Must be training to work specifically with special needs persons up to age 21, excluding the academically gifted, in an educational setting.
- Must agree to teach in a North Carolina Public School system for one year after graduation as a teacher of exceptional children.
- Applications must be postmarked no later than April 1st.
- All application information must be complete.
- Letter of recommendation
- Brief Essay
- Financial aid statement filled out by college Financial Aid Director.
- Applicants not meeting these requirements will be excluded.
Value
The amount varies from year to year and multiple recipients may be presented. In recent years, scholarships have ranged from $500 to $2500, and have been awarded to multiple candidates each year.

Golden LEAF Scholars Program - Two-Year Colleges
Description
Provides grants up to $750 per semester, including summer session, for curriculum students and up to $250 per semester for occupational education students to be applied toward their tuition, registration fees, and related expenses at the community colleges where they are enrolled. Scholarships will be need and merit based on a first-come, first-served basis. Eligible recipients can choose to attend any of the 58 member institutions of the North Carolina Community College System.
Eligibility
To be eligible, a student must:
1) Be a permanent resident of one of the 73 eligible counties as determined by the Golden LEAF Foundation.
2) Show financial need. All students will be required to disclose other financial aid awards in order for funding to meet the needs of the broad population of students.
Curriculum students should demonstrate a need based on FAFSA information.
Occupational education students should demonstrate a need under federal TRIO formula. This criterion will be used so occupational education students will not need to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). All students will be required to disclose other financial aid awards in order to meet the needs of the broad population of students. The maximum income levels under the federal TRIO formula are:
- Family size 1: Income less than $15,315
- Family size 2: Income less than $20,535
- Family size 3: Income less than $25,755
- Family size 4: Income less than $30,975
- Family size 5: Income less than $36,195
- Family size 6: Income less than $41,415
- Family size 7: Income less than $46,635
- Family size 8: Income less than $51,855
Note: For family units with more than 8 members, add $5,220 for each additional family member.
3) Curriculum (degree-seeking) students must be enrolled half-time for a full award. Less than half-time students may be considered pending availability of funds.
Finalists meeting all the eligibility criteria will undergo a separate "merit" competition. Selection is based on:
1) The effect of the decline in the tobacco industry on his or her family
2) The effect of the declining economy on his or her family
3) Academic record
4) Overall evaluation of the application
5) Leadership and community service
Value

Application Procedure
Students will file a Golden LEAF Scholars application. Applications will be filed with college financial aid offices and should NOT be sent to North Carolina Community College System. Applications do not need to be completed for each award period. Student applicants bear full responsibility for completing the Golden LEAF application prior to each deadline as designated by the college financial aid office.
Applicants will complete the waiver form for use of their Social Security numbers. (Social security numbers will be used for tracking purposes only.) This form is available through community college financial aid offices.
Golden LEAF Scholarship - Four Year University Program
Description
The Golden LEAF Scholarship for public university students is funded through a grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. This scholarship is designed to assist current high school seniors, current North Carolina community college students and students currently enrolled at public North Carolina four-year universities. Current public university recipients of the Golden LEAF Scholarship can reapply for the 2008-09 academic year.
Eligibility
To be considered for this award, a student must:
- Enroll at any participating North Carolina public university in Fall 2008 as a full-time degree-seeking undergraduate student.
- Be an incoming freshman, an incoming transfer student from a North Carolina community college in Fall 2008, a currently enrolled student at a North Carolina public four-year university or a previous recipient of the Golden LEAF Scholarship at a public university.
- Be a permanent resident of a qualifying rural county that is economically distressed (Tier I, II or III) and/or tobacco dependent. Note: this requirement does not apply to current recipients of the Golden LEAF Scholarship at public universities applying for grant renewal.
- Demonstrate financial need.
Additional Considerations
Priority for scholarships will be given to students from families adversely affected by the decline of the tobacco industry. The selection criteria for applicants will not include the value of real property owned by farm families. Recipients of other scholarships amounting to 75% or more of the total costs to attend a public university will be given low priority for a Golden LEAF Scholarship. Students who have earned four-year (bachelor) degrees are not eligible for consideration.
Value
The Golden LEAF Scholarship is valued at $3,000 for the 2008-09 academic year ($1,500 for the Fall 2008 semester and $1,500 for the Spring 2009 semester). A total of 580 scholarships will be available for new and renewal students.
Application Procedure
The Golden Leaf Scholarship application for new applicants is online and may be accessed after January 17, 2008 by completing the scholarship application tool (the Scholarship Wizard). The priority deadline for applying is March 17, 2008.
Applications from students renewing their Golden LEAF scholarships received at public universities, and for students transferring in Fall 2008 to four-year campuses from North Carolina community colleges will be accepted until funds are exhausted.
Previous recipients of the Golden LEAF Scholarship at public universities received renewal information by email.
Jagannathan Scholarships
Description
Established by industrialist N.S. Jagannathan, the scholarships were first awarded for the 1996-97 academic year. The Jagannathan Scholarship program is administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority.
Eligibility
The award is available to graduating high school seniors who plan to enroll as college freshmen in a full-time degree program at one of the constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina. Applicant must be a resident of North Carolina. Special consideration is given to students whose parents are employees of TIEPET, Universal Fibers, and related companies. Recipients are chosen by a central selection committee on the basis of academic achievement (as indicated by class rank, cumulative GPA, and SAT scores), leadership and financial need.
Value
The maximum award for 2008-09 is $3,500. Award cannot exceed demonstrated financial need. Scholarship may be renewed for three years or six semesters if enrolled in a four-year undergraduate program, or four years or eight semesters if enrolled in a five-year undergraduate program. Recipient must have continued financial need, maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and must maintain good citizenship at an eligible institution.
Application Procedure
Applications can be obtained from the applicant's high school counselor's office, TIEPET, Universal Fibers, and related companies; or the financial aid office of one of the constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina. Applications must be submitted back to where the applicant received them for review. Applicant must be nominated by one of the following: TIEPET, Universal Fibers, and related companies; the financial aid office of one of the constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina; or by his/her high school counselor. Applicant must take the College Board Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT) and file College Scholarship Service's PROFILE. Student must register, complete and submit the PROFILE with CSS by February 8, 2008. The deadline for mailing the Jagannathan scholarship application to NCSEAA is February 15, 2008. Students who do not have documented financial need will not be considered for the scholarship. Students will be notified in May of their candidacy status.
North Carolina Bar Association Scholarship (NCBA)
Description
The North Carolina Bar Association Scholarship provides to college students who are the children of slain or permanently disabled law enforcement officers.
Eligibility
Applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be the natural or adopted child of a NC law enforcement officer who was killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty
- Apply prior to reaching his or her 27th birthday
- Be enrolled or accepted for admission in a college, vocational training school or other educational institution approved by the scholarship committee of the Young Lawyers Division of the NC Bar Association
- Demonstrate financial need and merit

North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship (ELS)
DescriptionThe North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship (ELS) was created by the 2005 General Assembly to provide financial assistance to needy North Carolina resident students attending eligible colleges and universities located within the state of North Carolina.
Eligibility
Applicant must:
- Be a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes
- Enroll for at least six credit hours per semester in a curriculum program
- Meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the institution
- Be admitted, enrolled and classified as an undergraduate student in matriculated status in a degree, certificate or diploma program at an eligible North Carolina institution (UNC campuses, Community College Campuses, Independent College Campuses and certain other private colleges)
Eligibility is determined based on the same criteria as the Federal Pell Grant with one exception; students not eligible for the Federal Pell Grant with an estimated family contribution of $5000 or less will be eligible for an Education Lottery Scholarship. Students who have earned baccalaureate (four-year) college degrees are ineligible.
Value
It is estimated for 2007-08 that there will be approximately 30,000 grants available to assist students. The value per grant will vary according to information that is generated from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid application. Grants will range from $100 to $2,500 for the year.

Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is also used to qualify for Federal Pell Grants.
North Carolina Student Incentive Grant (NCSIG)
Description
This program is offered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority through College Foundation Inc.
Eligibility
Applicant must 1) be a US citizen, 2) be a North Carolina resident, 3) be enrolled or accepted for enrollment on a full-time basis at a North Carolina postsecondary institution, 4) not be enrolled in a program designed primarily for career preparation in a religious vocation, and 5) maintain satisfactory academic progress. Award is available to undergraduates who demonstrate substantial financial need.
Value
Award for the current year is $700.
Application Procedure
Student must 1) complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), 2) show on the form that North Carolina is his/her state of legal residence 3)List at least one North Carolina college, university, technical or vocational school in the release section of the form. The deadline for applying is March 15 of each year; however, funds are typically exhausted by the end of February.
North Carolina Veterans Scholarships
DescriptionProgram assists children of certain deceased or disabled veterans, or children of veterans who were listed as POW/MIA.
Eligibility
Award is available to children of certain deceased or disabled veterans or of veterans who were listed as POW/MIA. Veteran must have been a legal resident of North Carolina at time of entry into service, or child must have been born in North Carolina and resided there continuously.
Value
Full scholarships provide for four academic years of free tuition, room and board allowances and mandatory fees at state-supported institutions. Limited scholarships provide free tuition and mandatory fees. The yearly value at private institutions is $4,500 (full) and $1,500 (limited). Awards may be used for either undergraduate or graduate study.
Application Procedure
Applications can be obtained through the NCNeighbors.com website or by sending a request and a self-addressed stamped envelope to NCVVI, PO Box 17082, Raleigh, NC 27619. Applications must be received between January 1 and the last day of February. The applicant must provide: a copy of the Department of Defense Form DD214 to document Vietnam service; a copy of the applicant's birth certificate and/or marriage license, as needed; a personal statement; a list of current activities and awards; and a short essay (400-600 words typed and double-spaced) on a topic relating to the Vietnam War. The essay topic will be posted to NCNeighbors.com sometime after Thanksgiving.
North Carolina 4-H Development Fund Scholarships
EligibilityRecipient must be a resident of North Carolina, enrolling as an undergraduate in a four-year accredited North Carolina college or university or a junior or community college in the state, provided the program of study selected is transferable to a four-year college; have an outstanding record of 4-H Club participation and achievement; possess an excellent high school academic record; and demonstrate an aptitude for college work through SAT scores. For some of the awards, financial need is a prerequisite. Some awards have geographic restrictions to regions of the state while others are specific to a degree program or to a designated college or university.
Value
The amount of the award ranges from $500 to $2,500. Some scholarships are renewable.

Applications are available in the fall through each county cooperative extension office in North Carolina.
NC Community College Grant & Loan Program
DescriptionGrants are available to North Carolina residents who demonstrate financial need and are enrolled at North Carolina community colleges.
Eligibility
Students must be North Carolina residents enrolled for at least 6 credit hours per semester in curriculum programs. Eligibility is determined based on the same criteria as the Federal Pell Grant; students not eligible for the Federal Pell Grant may be considered for the grant based on their estimated family contribution as determined on the Student Aid Report. Students who have earned the baccalaureate (4 year) college degree are ineligible.
Value
The value per grant will vary according to information that is generated from the Pell Grant application.
Application Procedure
Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is also used to qualify for Federal Pell Grants. This form can be completed at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Consideration for funding is automatic once the FAFSA is filed. Please contact the financial aid officers at the local community colleges for more specific information regarding procedures, etc.
Progress Energy Scholarship Program
DescriptionAssistance program for students enrolled at an eligible community college.
Eligibility
Recipient must be a North Carolina resident enrolled, or planning to enroll as a full-time student in a course of study leading to a two-year technical degree at Cape Fear Community College, Fayetteville Technical Community College, or Wake Technical Community College in an approved major. Recipients must maintain a GPA at or above the level required for graduation and must continue at the college where enrolled at the time of the scholarship award and for the duration of the scholarship. Contact the above-mentioned schools for a list of approved programs. Partial scholarships may be offered to continuing students who have completed half of the required course of study in their majors at one of the three colleges.
Value
Three colleges receive $15,000 to be divided among recipients. The scholarship may be renewed, provided recipient maintains a passing grade average at or above the level required for graduation, and continues full-time enrollment in a degree program at the institution from which he/she received the scholarship award
Application Procedure
Recipients will be selected annually by a scholarship committee at each eligible institution. For more information, contact the financial aid office of the community college you plan to attend.
Rehabilitation Assistance for the Blind and Visually Impaired
DescriptionThis is a state and federally-funded program for NC residents who are blind or visually impaired.
Eligibility
Student must be a North Carolina resident enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program at a North Carolina postsecondary institution. Student must be legally blind or have a progressive eye condition that may result in blindness, thereby creating an impediment to employment for the individual. It is presumed that an individual can benefit from vocational rehabilitation services, but it must be shown that an individual requires vocational rehabilitation services to remove the impediment to employment. The goal of assisting with postsecondary training is to enable the student to obtain employment.
Value
The amount of the assistance is based on financial need. Assistance may cover tuition, books and supplies and reader service.

State Contractual Scholarship Fund Program (SCSF)
DescriptionThis program was created by General Statute in 1971 and is administered by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. It was designed by the General Assembly to assist needy North Carolina residents who choose to attend a private postsecondary institution in North Carolina.
Eligibility
Student must be a resident of North Carolina for tuition purposes, enrolled full- or part-time as an undergraduate in an approved NC private college or university and have documented unmet financial need. The student must not be enrolled in a program of study the objective of which is the attainment of a degree in theology, divinity, or religious education or in any other program of study that is designed by the institution primarily for career preparation in a religious vocation.
Value
Each participating campus receives an allocation of $1,350 for the year for each enrolled North Carolina resident. The total allocation is divided among needy North Carolina students attending the institution and amounts per student may vary.
Application Procedure
Recipients are chosen by the financial aid offices of the eligible private institutions in North Carolina.
Other Information
Licensure Student: Beginning with the 2006-2007 academic year, a licensure student may be considered based on the following criteria:
- Has a Bachelor's degree
- Be enrolled in an approved institution in a licensure program for teachers or nurses
- Be enrolled in undergraduate classes on a full or part-time basis
- Meets the in-state residency requirements
- Not be enrolled in a degree program in theology, divinity, or religious education or in any other program of study that is designed by the institution primarily for a career in a religious vocation
- Not defaulted on a federal student loan and does not owe a refund on any federal program
State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC) Scholarships (Need-Based)
DescriptionFirst established in 1974, the SEANC Scholarship Program provides endowments to SEANC members, their spouses, and their children to attend technical schools, community colleges, trade schools, junior colleges, or four-year universities on a full-time basis. Both need-based and merit-based scholarships are available.
Eligibility
Scholarships are available for candidates who possess demonstrated academic potential, financial need, school and community involvement, and character and motivation.
Applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Must be a SEANC member, a spouse of a SEANC member, or a child of a SEANC member
Demonstrate both academic merit and the financial need
Value
Awards are $1,000 for four-year schools and $500 for trade schools, community colleges and SEANC members with full-time jobs. The scholarships are nonrenewable, but previous recipients may reapply.
Application Procedure
Scholarship applications are available on request from SEANC members after the first of December each year, with the application period beginning in January and closing on April 15. Visit the SEANC web site for more information or to request an application.
The University of North Carolina Need Based Grant
DescriptionGrants available for eligible students attending one of the 16 campuses of the University of North Carolina.
Eligibility
Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at one of the 16 constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina. Eligibility is based on a calculation of need, using income data from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Value
Award amounts vary, based on legislative appropriations.
Application Procedure
Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), listing at least one constituent institution of The University of North Carolina. Consideration for the grant is automatic once the FAFSA is filed; no formal deadline has been established. Applicants should meet priority deadlines established by their institution. Late applicants may be denied if insufficient funds are available.
Vocational Rehabilitation Program
DescriptionFinancial assistance for college available to individuals with a mental or physical disability which is an impediment to employment.
Eligibility
In order to qualify for this program, a student must have a mental or physical disability that is an impediment to employment. Each program is designed individually with the student. Assistance with counseling, job placement, and some support services such as interpreters, can be provided without regard to financial need. Assistance with the costs of tuition and fees, transportation, books, etc., depends upon demonstrated financial need and the student's award from other sources of financial aid.
Value
The amount of the assistance is based on financial need and the type of program in which the individual enrolls. The Division can assist eligible persons with the cost of tuition and fees not to exceed $2,428 annually.

Wachovia Technical Scholarship Program
DescriptionScholarships are offered to students enrolled in two year technical programs.
Eligibility
Recipient must be enrolled full time in the second year of a two-year technical program at a North Carolina community college. The student must demonstrate financial need and scholastic promise. The scholarship may be used to pay for books, tuition, and transportation.
Value
One (1) scholarship per college valued at $500 each. These scholarships are distributed among the 58 colleges in the community college system, and are distributed in two payments: $250 for fall semester and $250 for spring semester.

Each college shall establish a special committee to select scholarship recipients.
Other Information
The recipients of the scholarships will be selected each year from applicants meeting the established criteria at local community colleges. Colleges may not submit alternate recipients for the Wachovia scholarship in the spring semester after March 1.
Crumley and Associates - Crib to College Scholarship
DescriptionCrumley and Associates is a law firm with offices in several North Carolina counties. The Crib to College Scholarship will provide financial assistance and laptop computers to outstanding North Carolina high school seniors who will enroll at accredited colleges or universities in 2008-09.
Eligibility
To be considered, a candidate must:
- Be a North Carolina High School Senior
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better
- Be attending a four-year college or university in the Fall
- Have significant Community Involvement, i.e. volunteerism, non-profit program involvement, community projects.
Value
Five (5) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Each of the scholarship winners will also receive a laptop computer.

The application will be available after January 1, 2008 and the deadline for postmarked application is March 15, 2008. Dottie Martin Teachers Scholarship
DescriptionThis annual scholarship is designed for any student who is presently enrolled in a college or university and studying education. Its purpose is to assist aspiring teachers who are particularly interested in child guidance and counseling who want to make a difference in the lives of North Carolina's children. Eligible participants can be considered for the scholarship after approval of their program by the Board of Directors of the Dottie Martin Teachers Scholarship Fund.
Eligibility
Applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Plan to teach in North Carolina once their education is completed
- Presently be in an education program with an established career plan for teaching (high school students or recent high school graduates are not eligible to apply)
- Fully complete a series of background history forms present in the application
- Provide a recent college or university transcript, three letters of recommendation, and a typed essay which includes: reason for applying, career goals, teaching plans, and reasons why the applicant should receive the Dottie Martin scholarship and the financial burden that would be incurred without the scholarship

GlaxoSmithKline Opportunity Scholarships
DescriptionEstablished in 1988 by Burroughs Wellcome Company in the Research Triangle Park, this program offers Triangle residents the opportunity to improve their lives through further education or training.
Eligibility
Any person who has been a permanent resident of Chatham, Durham, Orange, or Wake County for the past six months, who can demonstrate the potential to succeed despite adversity, and who has an exceptional desire to improve himself or herself through further education or training may apply. There are no limitations on age, income level, previous education, course of study or training program the applicant is planning to pursue. Scholarship may be used to begin a program or continue a program in which the applicant is already enrolled. It may be used for technical or community college programs, vocational or trade programs, four-year college or university studies. GlaxoSmithKline Inc. and Triangle Community Foundation employees or their family members are not eligible.
Value
Between four and six awards are made annually. Up to $5,000 per year for a maximum of four years. Scholarship may be applied to expenses for tuition, required fees, and required books.

Latino Diamante Scholarship Fund
DescriptionDiamante, Inc. is a statewide non-profit organization, working to be a catalyst for change by nourishing cultural and community participation among Hispanics in North Carolina. Diamante offers scholarships to high school seniors recognizing contributions to the community, leadership qualities, and the achievements of Hispanic youth in North Carolina.
Eligibility
The award is available to students who will be college freshmen or sophomores during the 2007-08 academic year who
- Are Hispanic
- Plan to enroll at North Carolina institutions of higher education
- Provide a recommendation from a high school principal, a college counselor or a community leader
- Present a certified copy of school transcripts with a minimum C+ or 2.5 grade point average

Two scholarships valued at a minimum of $500 will be awarded for the 2007-08 academic year. Funds will be used for tuition and educational expenses.

North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA)
DescriptionNCACPA's charitable foundation, the NC CPA Foundation Inc., annually awards accounting scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, to deserving North Carolina accounting students.
Eligibility
Applicants must have a North Carolina residence and must be enrolled in a North Carolina college, community college, or university. They must have completed at least one college or university level accounting course and have completed at least 36 semester hours (or equivalent) by the start of the spring semester of the year of application. Recipients are required to be enrolled in an academic program leading to a degree in accounting or its equivalent, either currently or during the first semester following the awarding of the scholarship. The applicant must be sponsored by an accounting faculty member and must provide evidence of academic achievement, demonstrated by a grade point average (both accounting subjects and overall) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. A typed essay must be submitted on a topic provided on the electronic application form.

Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000 and are awarded annually in the Spring by the NC CPA Foundation.

North Carolina Education and Training Voucher Program
DescriptionFour-year scholarship for foster youth and former foster youth.
Eligibility
You must have aged out of the foster care system at age 18 or were adopted from foster care with adoption finalization after your 16th birthday; you must be under 21 years of age, must be accepted into or be enrolled in a degree, certificate, or other accredited program at a college or vocational program and show progress towards that degree or certificate. You must not have personal assets greater than $10,000, must be a US citizen or qualified non-citizen, and be eligible for the NC LINKS program.

Up to $5,000 per year for tuition, books, or qualified living expenses for up to 4 years.

North Carolina Hispanic College Fund Scholarship
DescriptionFour-year renewable awards for recent graduates of North Carolina high schools who are of Hispanic/Latino background and are committed to public service and community development.
Eligibility
Must have graduated from a NC high school within the past 2 years, must have a four-year cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale or a 3.5 on a 5.0 scale, and must be accepted into a 2- or 4-year college or university. Preference is given to full-time students but part-time students may apply. Preference will be given to foreign-born applicants or native-born children of foreign-born parents.
Value
Between $500 and $2,500. Scholarship recipients may apply for renewal for up to four years. Scholarships are designated for tuition, fees and room and board.

North Carolina Restaurant Association Hospitality Educational Foundation Scholarship
DescriptionThe Hospitality Educational Foundation of the NCRA provides scholarships for individuals pursuing educational programs in hospitality and tourism. Scholarships are awarded in four categories detailed below.
Eligibility
For the High School Students' Scholarship applicants must be:
- High school seniors who plan to enroll or students already enrolled in a
- full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year
- college or university, or vocational-technical school in North Carolina.
- Pursuing a course of study in culinary arts, hospitality management or
- tourism.
- North Carolina residents.
For the Community College or Culinary Students in Two-Year Programs
applicants must be:
- Students who are already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of

NC Teaching Fellows Program
DescriptionThis program was adopted and funded by the 1986 North Carolina General Assembly as part of a ten-point teacher recruitment plan proposed by the Public School Forum of North Carolina. The first recipients were named in 1987.
Eligibility
Applicants must be North Carolina residents currently enrolled as high school seniors and qualifying high school juniors. Selection is made on the basis of high school grades, class standing, SAT scores, writing samples, community service, extracurricular activities, and references from teachers and members of the community. Interviews at the local and regional levels are required. Recipients must be accepted for admission to one of the following postsecondary institutions in North Carolina: Appalachian State University, Campbell University, East Carolina University, Elizabeth City State University, Elon University, Lenior-Rhyne College, Meredith College, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University, Queens University, UNC Asheville, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, UNC Pembroke, UNC Wilmington, and Western Carolina University. Applicants are screened by two committees, one from the applicant's local school district, and the other from the educational region in which the applicant lives. Candidates recommended by the selection committees are interviewed by the Regional Screening Committees. Financial need is not a selection criterion.
Value
Subject to continuing legislative appropriations, up to 500 Teaching Fellows are selected annually from area high schools. The maximum award is $6,500 per year and is renewable for a total of four years of college.

Teaching Obligation: Scholarship recipients are required to teach in a North Carolina public school for one year for each year of assistance they receive. Scholars have seven years from the date of college graduation to repay the loan, either through service or cash repayment at 10% interest.
Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program
DescriptionThis federally funded scholarship program was established to promote student excellence and academic achievement.
Eligibility
Recipient must be a senior at a public, charter or private high school in North Carolina or have a GED certificate and be accepted for enrollment as an undergraduate in an approved postsecondary institution. Byrd Scholars are selected on the basis of demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and promise of continued academic excellence. The scholarship may be used to attend any accredited postsecondary institution in the United States. Financial need is not a criterion.
Value
Approximately 160 awards are made annually in North Carolina. The value of the award for 2004-05 was $1,500 and may be renewed for up to four years of undergraduate study, subject to continued funding by the US Congress.
Application Procedure
Applications will be available in December from high school principals and school counselors of the public and private high schools in North Carolina. A student must be nominated by the school he/she is attending to be considered for the award. The application deadline is February 10, 2006. Awards are announced in May. State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC) Scholarships (Merit-Based)
DescriptionFirst established in 1974, the SEANC Scholarship Program provides endowments to SEANC members, their spouses, and their children to attend technical schools, community colleges, trade schools, junior colleges, or four-year universities on a full-time basis. Both need-based and merit-based scholarships are available.
Eligibility
Two merit-based categories of scholarships are available for SEANC members, their spouses, and dependents who possess demonstrated academic potential, school and community involvement, and character and motivation. Financial need is not a criterion.
