| Raymond W. “Rusty” Van Pelt’s passion was education first, and athletics a close second. Born and raised in Clayton, NM, Rusty attended NMSU on a football scholarship. He was selected as the Greatest Aggie in 1948. He received his B.S. in 1949 and his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration in 1954. His teaching career began at Las Cruces High School in 1949. In 1965, Rusty became the first assistant principal and athletic director at Mayfield High School. In 1967, he became the principal and held that position until his retirement in 1985. Rusty passed peacefully on January 4, 2011. His family wished to honor him and his wonderful life by establishing this scholarship. | |

| Senior graduating in 2011 from Mayfield High School, Las Cruces, New Mexico; enrolling as an education major at New Mexico State University (NMSU); demonstrated participation in high school activities and community involvement; with a grade point average equal to or greater than 3.0. Two scholarships of $750 each will be awarded. | |
