| The Community Foundation has a number of scholarship opportunities for traditional students which include high school seniors and those who are 24-years-old, or younger. Most traditional scholarships are awarded to high school seniors of Charlotte, Manatee, and Sarasota counties and recent graduates of Sarasota County high schools who are already in college. Frequently Asked Questions - Traditional Scholarship Program 1.Who is eligible to apply? Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte County graduating high school seniors and recent graduates of Sarasota County schools who are currently attending college or technical school. 2. Do I have to be planning to attend a Florida state college or university? No. Scholarship recipients can attend any accredited college or university in the USA or abroad, as well as any accredited technical school or vocational school including, but not limited to, cosmetology, car or equipment repair, and all health care and safety professions. 3. Are these scholarships based on merit? Community Foundation scholarships are awarded through a competitive process. Caring volunteers on the Scholarship Committee make their selections based on financial need, leadership potential, academic performance, work experience and commitment to school and community through volunteerism. 4. How does the Community Foundation define financial need? It is difficult to define financial need when personal circumstances often vary from family to family. For example: A student is planning to attend a state college with a total yearly cost of $18,000 (as defined by the college), comes from a family of five or fewer who have no extenuating health problems, and only one family member is in college. If his or her family income is above $80,000 - $85,000, it is probably above the Community Foundation need threshold . Another applicant with the identical family income but different circumstances, such as multiple family members in college, high family medical bills or four or more siblings in the family, might fall within the Community Foundation need threshold . Exceptions are made depending on family circumstances. Every application is considered individually. 5.What does the ideal scholarship recipient look like? An ideal applicant has financial need, has earned a 2.8 GPA or better thus showing the committee he/she can complete upper level curricula, has volunteered in a school or community activity or sport, has worked to earn money for school and has well defined goals and objectives toward school. | |
